Strength

Courage • Restraint • Devotion

What is gentle endures.

Strength is the archetype of inner force—the kind that does not announce itself through domination, resistance, or control. It represents the ability to remain present in the face of intensity and to transform what is powerful without destroying it.

This card appears in moments that demand steadiness rather than action: enduring uncertainty, caring for something difficult, holding a boundary, continuing after disappointment, or meeting fear without becoming governed by it. Strength is rarely dramatic. More often, it reveals itself through consistency—the quiet decision to remain open when withdrawal would be easier.

Traditionally shown beside a great beast, Strength has long represented a relationship between opposing forces within the self. Instinct and awareness. Desire and discipline. Wildness and restraint. The image is not one of conquest.

The figure does not overcome through force, but through contact. There is a paradox in this card. What appears soft is often stronger than what appears unbreakable. Control can collapse under pressure; presence can withstand it. Strength suggests that true power is not measured by how much can be contained, but by how much can be met without fear.

Strength reminds us that transformation does not always happen through sudden change. Sometimes it happens through staying. Through returning. Through discovering that gentleness and power were never opposites at all.
